THE NEON NOIR STORIES – PREFACE

jeu, 10/04/2014 - 16:01

Neon noir teaser 2 LD

EN

Dear You,

I would like to tell you more about Neon Noir and our new music video, “The Automatons”, which will be released on April 22nd.

I shall first apologise for the sketchiness of most of my recollections, as regards my dreams and the following course of events. I am afraid my memories have proved very faulty of late. I hope this will not seem too confused. The idea was to give you an inkling of how Neon Noir was born.

I could not tell when exactly I first started dreaming about this city. Surely I was still living in Brittany at the time. In this dream, I am standing on the pavement of a very narrow street, by the entrance of a restaurant. The place is crowded and lively, its loud hubbub only slightly muffled by the front doors. I am waiting for someone. I am waiting for a woman whom I do not know yet. Still, I can already sense, instinctively, the power of her beauty, like an earthquake quietly growling under my feet. I have never seen her but I know I would recognise her straight away. I peer through the windows in hope to catch sight of her, at first to no avail. I cannot recall clearly how but I eventually get to see her. Is that her seated, wearily resting her head upon the palm of her right hand? Would she prod my shoulder from behind in order to gently surprise me? In that case one’s imagination can readily go wild and it makes one question the very nature of memories, especially while remembering dreams. At some point in my dream she disappears and I end up getting lost, treading along a wire fence that hinders my exploration. Beyond the wire fence, a piece of waste land stretches towards the horizon.

I awoke feeling haunted by the atmosphere of this strange city. Its colours, so vivid, so powerful, still linger in my mind. It feels like ever since, every time I was bewildered by some lady’s beauty, I was reminded of the mysterious and timeless figure of the woman in my dream. It pains me not to be able to describe her features with accuracy. Such beauty differs from the calm and appeasing aesthetics of a landscape. Her beauty was fragile, dangerous, urgent, a poison that tasted delicious.

Sometimes it strikes you as irrational yet utterly obvious. It reminds me of Haruki Murakami’s famous epiphany in 1979. Haruki was watching a baseball game when one of the players struck the ball majestically, achieving a “home-run”. At this very moment, when the thud of the bat resonated in the stadium, Haruki instantly knew he would write his first novel “Hear the Wind Sing”. Isn’t it intriguing how two apparently unrelated events might become connected? By which means was Haruki struck by such certainty? I could not explain to you why I think the dream city of my slumbers shall be called Neon Noir. It simply sprung to mind, bubbled up and made perfect sense. Once lost in Neon Noir, one feels equally remote and distant from oneself. One feels struck by a blurry feeling of déjà-vu, fuelled by memories we dare not remembering.

Back in the winter of 2012, I was living in Brussels, sharing the most peculiar flat with a lovely actress from Switzerland. Such a strange place it was! The flat was squeezed under the rafters of a concrete building (read appallingly ugly) on “La Rue Haute”, a street wedged uncomfortably between the touristic area of Les Sablons and the popular (read rather dodgy) neighbourhood of Les Marolles. The whole city looked glazed, petrified by the cold. All colours seemed blurred out by the glum winter lights and all you longed for was to stay in bed, wrapped up in a warm blanket, wrapped up in reveries. One of those icy nights I had another dream about Neon Noir. I am again waiting for her, this time by an ivy-laden fountain. I can still hear the sound of water trickling from the beak of the bird-shaped statue, corroded, misshapen by the years. I can still feel the cold hauling my shoulders and tensing the muscles in my neck. The water is crystal clear and still one cannot see the bottom of the basin, which appears as dark as a well. I am not wearing gloves and hence clap my bare hands to warm up. I breathe out wafts of steam to help me pass the time. She is late and I am unsure how long I will have to wait for. She never shows up. I wrote a short acoustic piece about this second dream, entitled “Seleghi’s Park”

“How long have you been waiting? / Frozen to the bones / By the ivy-laden fountain / Dried up to the stones”

Not so often, but regularly dreams of this city recurred. When the following autumn neared and upon my return to Lille, I decided to take some time off work and focus on my art. Having all this time on my hands felt a little daunting. This is when I actually took to write about Neon Noir. Why? Because there was nothing else for me to write about. I thought it would be a good idea to invent a few characters and have them explore Neon Noir with me.

Neon Noir is unlikely to ever be released in the classical format of an LP. Seeing it as a puzzle, we thought it would be much more interesting to start sharing it with you story after story, chapter after chapter, in a filmed form, in no chronological order. Who knows, maybe someday we will piece them all together? How long will it last for? I am still writing the Neon Noir stories and am still looking forward to being influenced by your feedback. I am uncertain this might ever come to an end. Here’s the starting point: a middle-aged man, named Indigo, falls asleep on a train and wakes up in a city called Neon Noir. He first meets Gilbert, a clair-obscure character whose intentions are unclear. While feeling lost, many a thing in Neon Noir will find echo within him. People, lights, places, glances, allude to memories buried deep.

How about the Automatons? In this chapter, recounted by Gilbert, Indigo has fallen ill.  He encounters two automatons that may possess the key to unlock his recovery. We will discuss this in more depth later.

We hope you will enjoy our Neon Noir stories.

With much love,

Jordan

Cher Toi,

“How long have you been waiting? / Frozen to the bones / By the ivy-laden fountain / Dried up to the stones”

Amoureusement,

Jordan

NEW LIVE VIDEO OF PAN AURORA PERFORMING AT SECRET SESSIONS

jeu, 29/08/2013 - 15:38

PA at secret session 2013

EN: As some of you may have noticed, we happened to be playing the Nuits Secrètes Festival on August 3d. They were kind enough to invite us after the gig to their well-known Secret Sessions. Being given 2 hours to write, perform and record a brand new song with their team of musicians, we came up with this mellow pop track entitled “A Bit of a Punk”. I personally enjoyed the experience immensely. Especially considering that jamming is at the polar opposite of how we usually work. Special thanks to Jeff (guitar), Mathias (backing vocals) and Thibaut (drums) for playing with us.

Here’s the live footage of this written-on-the-spot tune. We hope you’ll enjoy it! Please give us some feedback.

J

Ephemeron’s lyrics

dim, 02/06/2013 - 18:13

Hi Everyone! I’ve just uploaded all the words sung on our last EP, Ephemeron. By the way we’ve got some great news coming up so stay tuned! ;) J

Ephemeron's cover art

Ephemeron (released 12th May, 2013 on Monopsone)

Sky Drops

Haven’t you heard the rain, tiptoeing to your door?

Wouldn’t it take much more to wake you up?

Haven’t you felt the pinch, the needle stuck into your bones?

Wouldn’t it take much more to wake you up?

I should yell out the names you whispered in my ears

Would they shake you out of slumber dear?

If you kept your eyelids shut down, my poison would fuel this bonfire, bonfire (x2)

When the tip of our tongues entangled, twisted tight

A soothing taste appealed to me

If you’re ever to sail back from your reverie.

I’ll welcome you with open arms.

If you kept your eyelids shut down my poison would fuel this bonfire, bonfire (x2)

 Z

Cast away, yet unabashed

Enjoy the scene before the clash

Strands of hair, underwear

Frozen tones

Lying dead among the ruins (repeat)

Now here I am roaming around

Our bitter waves now crawling underneath my feet

Gathering up the pieces of you scattered everywhere

(x2)

My frowning face, taunting grimace

Failed to replace your silly laugh

All I could say, all I could do

Twisted my knife deeper into your wounds

Deeper into your wounds

Deeper into your wounds

Wait for your true self to be revealed

(deeper into your wounds)

Your quirks are way too noisy to conceal

(deeper into your wounds)

Write down all the sins we used to share

(deeper into your wounds)

Please read them aloud now if you dare

(deeper into your wounds)

Now here I am roaming around

Our bitter waves now crawling underneath my feet

Gathering up the pieces of you scattered everywhere

(x2)

Heavy Eyelids

Set ablaze the flame long gone

Blow the ambers till you’re out of breath

You say let’s wait until nightfall

We’ll be struck by the feeling again

Should your eyes tame the flickering lights?

Or be teased by the swaying tide

Let the perfume… linger, linger in the air

At the crack of dawn I heard your sigh

At the end of dusk I found

Burning ashes swirling in the air, swirling in the air

Set ablaze the flame long gone

Blow the ambers ‘til you’re out of breath

You say let’s wait until nightfall

We’ll be struck by the feeling again

Should your eyes tame the flickering lights?

Or be teased by the swaying tide

First the smell then come the fumes,

I can feel the pain but cannot see the wounds

Wonder when you locked me in

On the windows your fingers left some misshapen maps, I cannot figure out

Is it your way to tease me?

A burst of laughter through my teeth

Would I rather choke? Or would I rather burn?

Is it your way to end this?

At the crack of dawn I heard your sigh

At the end of dusk I found

Burning ashes swirling in the air, swirling in the air

Fact

As soon as I walk in I’m already lost, I’m already lost for words

As cruel as the beast I feel prone to beseech when I sense that the time has come

Your eyes, they gaze at me

As soon as I walk in I’m ready to burst, I’m ready to burst apart

Would you be so kind to dim out the lights so you’re not unprepared to watch me

Conduct my own demise, explode before sunrise

At last when I blend in and handle the talking my face wouldn’t stop to blush

I try not to stutter the lies I should mutter the words I’m allowed to say

I’ll keep my hands still I promise

Keep my tongue still I promise

Keep my fangs still I promise

Keep my tongue still I promise

I…

I pray you to let me unwind

As soon as I walk in I’m ready to burst, I’m ready to burst apart

Would you be so kind to dim out the lights

So you’re not unprepared to watch me

Conduct my own demise, explode before sunrise
